The application

In an optical communication network, data and information are transmitted in the form of light signals. Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) increases network capacity by enabling several forms of light to be used simultaneously as independent channels in a multimode optical fiber

The issue

As the amount of data exchanged continues to grow at a staggering rate, conventional fiber networks are reaching saturation point. The latest advances in fiber-optic communication have been combined by KDDI to dramatically increase throughput in the optical fiber.

Key performances of the partnership

• Dramatic increase in throughput: 10.16 Pb/s over a distance of 11.3 km in a single optical fiber, Core-to-core crosstalk less than -50 dB for LP01 and LP02
• 114 spatial channels: 19-core fiber capable of propagating 6 different spatial modes per core: LP01, LP11a, LP11b, LP21a, LP21b, LP02
• Compatibility with other fiber communication technologies: Multi-Core Fiber (MCF), Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) and Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM).
