Contec, a specialist in satellite ground stations, is entering the global commercial optical ground station (OGS) services market through a partnership with French optical communications company Cailabs, a developer and operator of optical ground stations.

Contec announced on September 11 that it has signed its first agreement with Cailabs for the commercial use of optical ground station services.

The contract is intended to provide free-space optical (FSO) communications ground station services for an overseas government agency. It is particularly significant as it represents the first commercial service to be delivered using Contec’s optical ground station infrastructure.

The two companies also intend to expand their strategic cooperation through additional service agreements and the joint development of future optical ground stations. To support this initiative, Contec CEO Lee Sung-hee attended the International Space Summit held in Paris on September 9-10, where Contec and Cailabs signed a strategic cooperation agreement.

Optical ground stations are next-generation space communication systems that use lasers rather than conventional radio frequency (RF) technology to transmit data between satellites and the ground. Capable of delivering data rates ranging from 10 to 100 Gbps, they are increasingly viewed as critical infrastructure for future space communications, enabling the transmission of high-resolution satellite imagery and large volumes of observation data.

As the number of satellites continues to increase and data demands grow, the limitations of traditional RF-based ground stations, particularly in terms of spectrum availability and transmission capacity, are becoming more apparent. As a result, competition to deploy optical communications infrastructure is intensifying across the global space sector.

At present, only a limited number of commercially operational optical ground stations exist worldwide. Contec plans to use this agreement as a stepping stone for expanding its optical ground station business into the global commercial services market.

In 2023, Contec began collaborating with Cailabs on the joint design and development of an optical ground station through a self-funded investment program. In April 2026, the company completed the deployment of its OGS at the Asia Space Park in Jeju.

The importance of this agreement lies in the fact that Contec’s optical ground station business is moving beyond the stages of research, development, and infrastructure deployment toward the provision of services to actual customers.

Building on the strategic agreement signed in Paris, the two companies plan to expand the geographical reach of their optical ground station services, jointly develop new stations, and pursue new customers around the world.
