The application
Mode Group Division Multiplexing (MGDM) is the use
of one information channel per mode group for direct
detection. It is a promising solution for increasing the
communication bandwidth in multimode optical fibers
while dealing with the phenomenon of mode mixing
The issue
OM2 fibers correspond to old generation multimode
optical fibers. They are generally limited to throughputs
of around 1 Gb/s over 500 m and they equip a large part
of the current optical telecommunications network. The
challenge is then to increase the bandwidth of these
multimode fibers to avoid complex and costly fiber
redeployment.
The PROTEUS solution
The PROTEUS solution, based on MPLC technology, enables to exploit the spatial component of light inside the optical fibers with MGDM, multiplying the information channels without making any physical changes to the network. A robust spatial multiplexer, compatible with a wide wavelength range and all types of inputs and outputs, it offers up to 45 spatial modes with minimum insertion loss (<1 dB/MUX) and record modal selectivity.
